Amazon renewable energy agreement in Shetland

Overview

Amazon has entered into a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with energy developer Statkraft for the Mossy Hill wind farm located near Lerwick in the Shetland Islands. The agreement involves the purchase of 36MW of renewable electricity from the eight-turbine onshore development.

The project is expected to become operational in November 2030, with turbines anticipated to be delivered in 2029. Once active, the farm is projected to generate enough electricity to power more than 57,000 homes annually. For Statkraft, the contract provides revenue certainty for construction, while Amazon intends to use the supply for its data centers, fulfillment centers, and corporate operations.

This deal aligns with Amazon’s strategy to reach net-zero carbon emissions by 2040. The company’s renewable energy portfolio in the United Kingdom now exceeds 50 projects with a combined capacity of over 1 GW, including previous commitments to the Moray West offshore wind farm and the Chirmorie Wind Farm.
