Amazonas state administration and political developments

Overview

Governor Roberto Cidade of Amazonas has undertaken several administrative and political actions. He confirmed that Serafim Corrêa will serve as his running mate for the 2026 re-election bid, describing Corrêa as “the best vice-governor in Brazil.”

In addition to political campaigning, Cidade launched the Secretaria Estadual da Causa TEA to manage public policies for individuals with autism spectrum disorder. This initiative includes monthly aid for parents, the expansion of specialized centers, and the construction of the Complexo TEA Amazonas.

On the judicial front, Cidade appointed lawyer Marco Aurélio de Lima Choy as a desembargador for the Amazonas Court of Justice (TJAM). Choy was selected via the ‘Quinto Constitucional’ mechanism, succeeding Domingos Jorge Chalub Pereira, who retired upon reaching the mandatory age.

Concurrently, the Amazonas Court of Accounts (TCE-AM) has intensified its oversight. The court unanimously rejected the 2023 accounts of former Careiro mayor Nathan Macena de Souza, ordering the return of R$ 393,026.60 to the public treasury due to irregularities in construction materials and documentation. Furthermore, TCE-AM president Yara Amazônia Lins delivered a list of approximately 321 managers with irregular accounts to the Regional Electoral Court (TRE-AM) to facilitate the application of the ‘Lei da Ficha Limpa’. To bolster oversight, the TCE-AM also renewed its Technical Cooperation Agreement with the Public Management Control Network to enhance joint inspections and combat corruption.
