AMD hardware and software developments

Overview

AMD is extending the lifecycle of its older hardware through new processor releases and software updates. Initial reports indicated the expansion of the AM4 platform with upcoming Ryzen 5 5600T and 5600XT processors, even as market usage of the socket declined.

Following this, AMD released the Adrenalin Edition 26.10.1 driver, which introduces FSR Upscaling 4.1 support to Radeon RX 6000 series GPUs. This update enables RDNA 2-based cards to use machine-learning-based image reconstruction. The technology is also being implemented on Xbox Series X|S consoles and ASUS ROG Ally handheld devices. Because RDNA 2 hardware lacks dedicated AI cores, the upscaling process will run on shader cores, potentially resulting in higher performance overhead.

For handheld devices like the ROG Ally X and X20, ASUS is rolling out preview drivers via Armoury Crate SE. These devices utilize a lightweight version of the FSR 4.1 model, optimized for Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme processors to balance graphical improvements with power efficiency and battery life. This update supports over 400 games that utilize FSR 3.1 or newer.

In a further move to support the AM4 platform, AMD is reintroducing the Ryzen 7 5800X3D as a ‘10th Anniversary Edition’. According to Travis Kirsch, Director of Customer Product Management at AMD, the decision to relaunch the chip in 2026 was planned well before DDR5 memory shortages and received support from CEO Lisa Su. Because the original production run had ceased, AMD underwent a significant re-engineering process, working with TSMC to adapt the chip to new manufacturing methods since the original chip-stacking techniques were no longer in use. This release aims to provide a final high-performance upgrade path for long-term AM4 users, allowing them to enhance gaming capabilities while retaining existing DDR4 memory and motherboards.
