Amediastiftelsen acquisition of Aschehoug
Overview
Amediastiftelsen has acquired Aschehoug, one of Norway’s largest publishing houses. The acquisition includes ownership stakes in several entities, including Forlaget Oktober AS, Norli AS, Fabel Lyd AS, Allvit AS, and De norske Bokklubbene AS, though it excludes the legal service Juridika and certain properties.
André Støylen, managing director of Amediastiftelsen, described the acquisition as a “cohesive system rather than a collection of individual assets,” expressing an interest in long-term ownership. The deal marks a significant concentration of media power in Norway, as Amedia is already the country’s largest newspaper publisher.
While the acquisition includes Fabel Lyd, an audiobook streaming service that has reported significant financial deficits, the foundation intends to focus on total group revenue with the goal of achieving positive outcomes for the service by 2026. As part of the transition, Aschehoug CEO Mads Nygaard is expected to step down around the turn of the year.
