Ammunition discoveries in Slovakia

Overview

In late August 2026, children playing near the village of Hostie in Slovakia’s Nitra Region discovered nine pieces of ammunition in a shallow pit. Pyrotechnicians identified the items as “relatively modern, post-war training ammunition” that contained no explosive components.

By mid-September, a separate discovery occurred in the Partizánske district, where a woman found World War II-era munitions while cleaning an abandoned family home. A specialist from the Trenčín emergency police unit confirmed the presence of one Model 34 hand grenade and 27 pieces of 7.92×57 Mauser infantry ammunition, noting that the items were “significantly corroded.”

In both instances, police and pyrotechnic specialists secured the sites and removed the items for destruction. Authorities have used these incidents to issue public safety warnings, advising citizens to never handle suspicious objects and to contact emergency services immediately if such items are encountered.
