Andhra Pradesh municipal election nomination violence

Overview

Violence and political clashes have intensified in Andhra Pradesh during the municipal election nomination and scrutiny processes. Unrest has been reported across several regions, including Punganur, Tirupati, Kadapa, Rayachoti, Rajampeta, Darsi, Pulivendula, and Kuppam.

In Punganur, the YSRCP accused TDP workers of using stones, sticks, and iron rods to vandalize the convoy of Rajampet MP P.V. Midhun Reddy. YSRCP chief YS Jagan Mohan Reddy condemned the incident, accusing Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu of creating a ‘jungle raj’ and misusing police machinery to intimidate the opposition. The YSRCP has called for the deployment of Central paramilitary forces to ensure fair elections.

During the scrutiny of nomination papers, tensions escalated in Kuppam, where clashes between TDP and YSRCP members led to a police lathicharge and several injuries. Chief Minister Naidu responded by accusing the YSRCP of bringing in ‘outside elements’ to disrupt the electoral process in multiple regions.

In Nellore, YSRCP officials have alleged a conspiracy by the ruling TDP and election officials to unfairly disqualify party candidates. Specifically, candidates Safiya Begum and Siddiq claimed their nominations were rejected during scrutiny. YSRCP MLC Parvatha Reddy Chandrasekhar Reddy has demanded greater transparency in the electoral process, alleging that officials are favoring the ruling party.
