Animal rights injunction against bullfighting in Yucatán

Overview

A federal judge in Yucatán, Mexico, issued a provisional suspension prohibiting the use of tools or weapons that cause pain, injury, bleeding, or suffering to bulls during scheduled bullfights in Muna. The injunction, prompted by animal rights organizations Animal Heroes and PETA Latino, forbids the use of swords, banderillas, rejones, puyas, or other objects that could cause undue stress or physical harm during the town’s Traditional Festival.

This ruling follows similar judicial resolutions in Tixkokob and Temozón. Alicia Aguayo, director of PETA Latino, noted that these consecutive rulings indicate that animal protection is a “legal obligation derived from the Constitution and federal laws.”
