Animal welfare violations in German transports

Overview

Authorities in Germany have intercepted multiple transport vehicles involving significant animal welfare violations.

In mid-August, veterinary officials in Langenau halted a transport of dogs and cats originating from Bulgaria. Inspectors reported that animals appeared “frightened or apathetic” and lacked sufficient water. One dog was seized after being deemed unfit for transport, and the remaining animals were moved to a shelter.

Later in the month, police in Anzing intercepted a livestock transporter on the A94 motorway carrying 190 calves. The inspection revealed extreme overcrowding, with animals packed so tightly that “their backs touched the ceiling of the loading area.” The driver, a Polish national, was found to be operating without required permits and using a fraudulent driver card to conceal rest times. The transport was halted to prevent further distress to the animals.
