Anti-Parisian vandalism in Brittany

In the Brittany region of France, specifically in southern Finistère, several incidents of vandalism have been reported targeting tourists from the Île-de-France region. Acts of hostility include scratching vehicles and applying graffiti with messages such as ‘Parigot, dehors’ (Get out, Parisian) and ‘Non aux Parisiens’ (No to Parisians). One instance also included an English message stating, ‘Tourists go home, refugees welcome.’

These incidents have been concentrated in coastal areas including Plobannalec-Lesconil, Penmarc'h, and Plogoff. In Plogoff, a sign reading ‘Parisians get out!’ was reportedly placed on a public motorway.

Local officials have condemned the actions. Loïc Le Fur, the Mayor of Plobannalec-Lesconil, described the spirit of the acts as ‘deeply shocking.’ David Le Berre, the Mayor of Penmarc'h, noted that while the vandalism is shocking, the region faces significant pressure due to seasonal population surges. For example, Penmarc'h’s population increases from approximately 5,600 to 17,000 during peak periods, placing strain on local infrastructure and services.
