Appiatse redevelopment project in Ghana
Overview
The Appiatse redevelopment project in the Prestea Huni-Valley Municipality has entered its third and final phase. This follows a devastating explosion on January 20, 2022, which killed 17 people, injured over 500, and displaced hundreds of residents.
Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, performed a sod-cutting ceremony to begin construction on 69 new housing units. These homes, ranging from one to six bedrooms, are designed to be “safer, greener, and more resilient” based on resident feedback. This phase aims to resettle households that have been living in temporary relief camps for approximately four years, where conditions have been marked by inadequate accommodation and limited access to potable water.
The current stage follows two previous phases: the delivery of 124 housing units in Phase One and compensation for 50 households in Phase Two. The final phase had previously faced delays while the government secured additional land.
