Arab League Palestinian genocide commemorations
Overview
The Arab Parliament and the League of Arab States have initiated formal commemorations for Palestinian victims of what they describe as genocide committed by Israeli authorities.
At an event held at the League of Arab States headquarters in Cairo, Arab Parliament President Mohamed bin Ahmed Al Yamahi called for accountability for those responsible for crimes against the Palestinian people. He supported a proposal to designate October 17 as an annual day of remembrance, marking the anniversary of the Al-Ahli Arab Hospital massacre in Gaza City. Al Yamahi urged the United Nations and the international community to cooperate with investigative mechanisms to uphold the 1948 Genocide Convention.
Following a decision from the 166th ministerial session of the Arab League, the organization held a ceremony to honor victims and pursue legal action against perpetrators at national, regional, and international levels. Officials at the ceremony highlighted a humanitarian catastrophe, noting that casualties in Gaza have exceeded 74,000 since October 2023. Representatives called for the unhindered entry of humanitarian aid and emphasized the need for practical measures, such as sanctions and pursuit of accountability through international courts.
