Aragua highway landslides and road closures

Overview

The Maracay-Choroní highway in Aragua state was closed indefinitely following multiple landslides on October 10. Intense rainfall caused debris, including rocks and fallen trees, to block kilometers 9, 10, and 25 of the route. Civil Protection officials deployed crews and heavy machinery to clear the road and rescue individuals trapped by the landslides.

By October 22, authorities in the Girardot municipality announced a temporary reopening of the road, scheduled to last through October 25. This window coincides with a pause in planned rehabilitation works, which include paving, reinforcement, and the installation of safety barriers to repair damage from previous rain-induced landslides. Security agencies have established checkpoints along the route through Henri Pittier National Park, and construction activities are set to resume on October 26.
