Potential hidden tomb structures near Tutankhamun

Overview

An international research team has identified evidence of a large, hidden tomb structure located behind the tomb of Tutankhamun in the Valley of the Kings. Using microgravity surveys, ground-penetrating radar, and electrical resistivity, researchers detected gravitational changes and a complex of corridors and chambers appearing to lie just meters beyond the known burial chamber.

Archaeologists suggest this hidden space may be the tomb of Queen Nefertiti, Tutankhamun’s stepmother. Supporting evidence includes a tomb layout featuring a right-hand turn characteristic of female royal tombs, the presence of mold suggesting a void behind the walls, and traces of erased inscriptions on Tutankhamun’s golden mask that may indicate funerary goods were repurposed from items originally intended for Nefertiti.

Recent findings published in ‘Occasional Papers of the Amarna Royal Tombs Project’ by the National Institute of Astronomy and Geophysics in Egypt have provided more granular data. A microgravity survey involving over 1,200 readings across approximately 35 square meters indicates that certain anomalies form right-angled structures aligned with the north wall of the burial chamber. One specific feature, identified as ‘anomaly 7’, contains a low-density zone with a square, higher-density area inside it.

The study also revealed a two-meter-wide corridor extending from Tutankhamun’s tomb and two distinct areas of varying density, pointing toward a potential network of passages and chambers. Structural engineer Georges Ballard noted the possibility of a secret room containing various objects. While these signals suggest the presence of rubble-filled passages or other spaces, they do not yet confirm the discovery of a new room or doorway.
