Archetyp Market darknet marketplace investigation

Overview

German prosecutors in Frankfurt have indicted a 31-year-old German national for his alleged role as the founder and administrator of the darknet marketplace ‘Archetyp Market’. The platform, which was shut down in June 2025 as part of ‘Operation Deepsentinel’, is described as having been the world’s largest trading platform for narcotics.

Between November 2022 and its closure, the marketplace reportedly processed approximately 2.3 million orders with an estimated turnover of 330 million euros. The site hosted over 600,000 customer accounts, 17,000 listings, and more than 3,000 professional sellers. Transactions involved various substances, including cocaine, heroin, fentanyl, crystal meth, and cannabis, as well as medicines and new psychoactive substances.

The suspect allegedly maintained the technical infrastructure for these illegal trades, using a platform escrow system where payments were made via the cryptocurrency Monero. Through this system, the accused is alleged to have earned a five percent commission on sales. Following an arrest in Barcelona by Spanish police in June 2025, the suspect is currently held in German pre-trial detention. Authorities have seized assets, including cash, luxury vehicles, and cryptocurrencies, valued at approximately 10 million euros.
