Overview

On 2 August 2026 the Argentine National Meteorological Service (SMN) forecast strong winds for San Juan and light rain for Mar del Plata, with gusts up to 50 km/h and a 10–40 % chance of showers. The next day, 3 August, yellow rain alerts were issued for La Plata and Santa Cruz, warning of thunderstorms, possible hail, intense lightning and rainfall up to 50 mm, and advising residents to stay indoors and keep drains clear. Later on 3 August the service expanded yellow storm alerts to cover several departments in Entre Ríos (Feliciano, Federal, Federación, Concordia, San Salvador) and a broader area spanning northern Entre Ríos, most of Corrientes, northeast Santa Fe, eastern Chaco and eastern Formosa, with expected precipitation of 30–50 mm, strong winds, hail and intense lightning. Additional alerts were released for Neuquén and Santa Cruz (10–25 mm). Further forecasts indicated that San Juan would experience another windy day on 6 August, with gusts possibly exceeding 50 km/h and no rain expected. New SMN information added a second windy day on 3 August, with temperatures between 6 °C and 19 °C, while Mar del Plata was expected to see mostly cloudy skies on 3 August, morning drizzle and a 10–40 % chance of isolated showers, temperatures of 9 °C‑14 °C, and light east‑southeast winds. On 3–4 August the SMN also issued yellow alerts for snow and white‑out conditions in the Patagonian cordillera of Chubut and Río Negro, forecasting 20‑50 cm of snow and reduced visibility, alongside existing thunderstorm warnings. Alerts for five northern provinces warned of storms, hail and strong winds with 30‑50 mm rain, and Entre Ríos received a similar warning for 30‑50 mm rain and gusty winds.
