Argentina dictatorship memory preservation initiatives

In Argentina, various initiatives are being undertaken to preserve the memory of victims of the military dictatorship through public signage, commemorative acts, and educational programs.

At the Regimiento de Concordia, a new memorial sign has been reinstalled to mark the location as a ‘Site of Memory’. The site served as a clandestine detention center during the country’s last civic-military dictatorship. The original 2021 signage was destroyed by a storm in 2023, and a subsequent attempt to reposition it was lost following a weather event in March 2024. Human rights organizations funded the replacement, which was marked by a ceremony including workshops and musical performances. This identification is protected under National Law No. 26,691.

Similar efforts are occurring in other regions. In Rosario, the Municipality installed a ‘Memory Mark’ at the former Magnum bar to commemorate the 1983 abduction of political activists Osvaldo Cambiaso and Eduardo Pereyra Rossi. In Neuquén, the Permanent Assembly for Human Rights (APDH) is replacing a ‘Memory Tile’ dedicated to Mirta Tronelli, a student leader disappeared in 1976, after it was removed during local renovations. Human rights forums are also organizing discussions with family members of the disappeared to maintain historical memory.

Educational initiatives have expanded to include guided tours for secondary school students. Through the ‘Echeverría Construye Memoria’ program, students visited several local sites, including the Monte Grande massacre site in Luis Guillón, the Plaza de la Memoria, the 1st Police Station in Monte Grande, and the former clandestine detention center ‘La 205’. These tours, facilitated by COPRET, aim to commemorate the 50th anniversary of ‘La Noche de los Lápices’ and educate younger generations.
