Argentina transport and labor disputes

Overview

Argentina continues to face logistical and labor disruptions in its transport and public service sectors.

Railway infrastructure remains a critical issue. Procurement failures persist, with Trenes Argentinos Operaciones having not purchased ballast stone since August 2023. Tenders for track work on the Belgrano Sur lines remain unawarded, and the Retiro–Tucumán passenger service has been suspended since September 2025 following a derailment in Santiago del Estero. While Nuevo Central Argentino (NCA) is reportedly working on repairs, the state-owned operator Sofse has provided no timeline for resumption. Additionally, Trenes Argentinos has announced a total suspension of the Sarmiento Line from October 10 to October 13 for essential infrastructure work, including signal control system replacement and track renovations.

Labor tensions are intensifying. In San Juan, the Unión Tranviarios Automotor (UTA) has continued a bus strike despite government attempts at mandatory conciliation. The union claims workers are receiving salaries based on April scales rather than agreed September increases, while provincial authorities have labeled the unannounced strike “illegal”. The UTA has also petitioned the National Secretary of Transport regarding the deterioration of the 40,000-kilometer national highway network, citing potholes and poor signage.

In Olavarría, the quarry company Galasur dismissed 19 workers, attempting to pay only half of the required severance. Public transport faces ongoing financial and legal challenges, including fare increases in Ushuaia and jurisdictional disputes in Paraná. Furthermore, the Uthgra union faces leadership uncertainty, and the UTA in Santa Fe remains on alert due to insufficient wage proposals.
