Argentina transport and labor disputes

Overview

Argentina is experiencing widespread logistical, financial, and labor disruptions across its transport and public service sectors.

In the railway sector, operations face significant challenges due to procurement failures. Trenes Argentinos Operaciones has not purchased ballast stone since August 2023 following unsuccessful tenders. In Olavarría, the quarry company Galasur dismissed 19 workers, citing a decline in public works and a debt of 1.8 billion pesos owed by Ferrocarriles Argentinos. The labor union AOMA is seeking negotiations to prevent further job losses.

Public transport is also under strain. In Ushuaia, bus fares have risen to $1,550, though officials note this remains well below the estimated operating cost of $3,720 per trip. In Moreno, a municipal tender to reorganize communal transport saw 70% of the service package go without interested operators.

Labor tensions are escalating across multiple unions. The hotel and gastronomy union, Uthgra, faces leadership uncertainty that has left 350,000 members in limbo regarding wage negotiations. Additionally, the UTA union in Santa Fe has declared a state of alert and permanent assembly due to insufficient wage proposals.
