Argentine historical memory and dictatorship documentaries

Efforts to preserve historical memory regarding the last civic-military dictatorship in Argentina have been highlighted through the recovery and recognition of documentary works.

In Corrientes, the Espacio de Memoria RI9 hosted a re-release of the documentary ‘Margarita Belén, un sueño inconcluso’. Directed by Pablo Almirón and originally filmed in 1996, the film was digitized after being lost for thirty years and contains testimonies from survivors and families regarding massacres. This context also includes historical records of disappeared individuals, such as Uruguayan militant Eduardo José María Del Fabro.

Additionally, the Legislature of the Autonomous City of Buenos Aires has declared the documentary series ‘1976. Ecos de la memoria’ to be of cultural interest. Produced by Grupo Octubre and created by Tristán Bauer, Daniel Filmus, and Carolina Scaglione, the four-part series premiered on Canal 9. The series utilizes archival footage, testimonies from human rights defenders, and artificial intelligence reconstructions to examine state terrorism, censorship, exile, and forced disappearances, aiming to reflect on how these historical events continue to impact Argentine society.
