Argentine judicial reforms and appointments

The Argentine government has introduced new regulatory measures and achieved significant legislative milestones regarding the judiciary.

In mid-August, Justice Minister Juan Bautista Mahiques signed Resolution 384/2026, establishing stricter requirements for judges and public prosecutors seeking to extend their terms beyond the constitutional age of 75. The new procedure mandates that applicants submit comprehensive documentation, including asset declarations and disciplinary certifications, to ensure transparency. The Ministry of Justice will facilitate public consultation of applicant backgrounds, while the Agency for Tax and Customs Control (ARCA) verifies tax and social security compliance.

By late August, the Argentine Senate approved 67 judicial appointments, including 45 judges, 9 prosecutors, and 12 public defenders. The administration of President Javier Milei characterized this as a historic record, noting it is the highest number of judicial approvals in a single year since 1994. The government attributed the success to political consensus-building within the Senate.
