Argentine labor union protest escalations

Overview

Labor leaders in Argentina have intensified calls for coordinated action against the economic policies of President Javier Milei’s administration. Omar Maturano, general secretary of the La Fraternidad railway union, pressured the General Confederation of Labour (CGT) to initiate an indefinite general strike, arguing that sectoral protests are insufficient to oppose labor deregulation and privatization efforts.

In response to ongoing tensions, the CGT scheduled a meeting with more than 20 unions to evaluate their ‘plan de lucha’ (struggle plan). The agenda includes defining new protest actions, discussing upcoming marches, and analyzing rising poverty and unemployment rates. Additionally, the Argentine Confederation of Transport Workers (CATT) planned a forum to discuss the political and social challenges facing the popular sector in Latin America.
