Argentine school emotional wellbeing legislation

The Argentine Senate granted half-sanction status to a bill proposed by Senator Flavio Fama to incorporate emotional education into the national curriculum. The initiative seeks to amend the National Education Law No. 26.206 to help students recognize, understand, and express emotions. The bill aims to address rising mental health concerns, such as anxiety and depression, by providing pedagogical resources for primary students and conflict management tools for adolescents.

Following Senate approval, the Legislature definitively approved the Emotional Wellbeing Promotion Law after the Chamber of Deputies supported amendments made by the Senate. These modifications, introduced by Senator María Rosa Martínez, shifted the legislative focus from individual self-control to a community-based approach. The final law integrates emotional education into initial, primary, and secondary levels while maintaining the validity of Comprehensive Sexual Education (ESI). While the project received support, representatives from La Libertad Avanza expressed reservations, suggesting the legislature first request reports from the General Directorate of Culture and Education to better coordinate cognitive and emotional learning.
