Armed attack on Çiğli Mayor's vehicle

Overview

An armed attack targeted the official vehicle of Çiğli Mayor Onur Emrah Yıldız in the parking lot of the Çiğli Municipality building in İzmir. A 21-year-old suspect, identified as K. S., arrived on a stolen motorcycle and fired several shots at the parked vehicle. The vehicle was empty at the time, and no injuries were reported. The suspect was intercepted by municipal security and subsequently apprehended by police with the weapon.

The incident triggered political reactions. Utku Gümrükçü, the CHP İzmir Provincial Chair, condemned the attack as a “threat to democracy” and an “act against the free will of the people.” Following the event, Erkan Akar, the founding district president of the Yeni Party in Çiğli, criticized the local CHP leadership, alleging they attempted to “downplay or ignore the attack” despite receiving support from other political parties.
