Armed attacks in Benue State, Nigeria
Overview
An armed group of approximately 200 individuals attacked the Ayilamo community in Benue State’s Logo Local Government Area, resulting in 12 deaths. The casualties included eight local residents and four mobile police officers. The assailants reportedly entered from neighboring Taraba State, engaging in a firefight with tactical units and setting fire to residential properties.
Local residents noted that the community has faced threats from armed groups for over two years, with some attributing the violence to rumors of mineral deposits in the region. Following the attack, the Department of State Services (DSS) arrested three suspects allegedly linked to the incident. Governor Hyacinth Alia commended the DSS for the arrests and described the event as a “despicable attack on the peace-loving people of Ayilamo.”
