Armed extortion attempt in Vlorë

Overview

An armed extortion attempt occurred at the Regina Palm resort in Radhimë, Vlorë, targeting businessman Vasil Bedinaj. A group of 10 to 20 individuals, some reportedly armed, demanded a 5 million euro fine and threatened Bedinaj to leave Albania within 48 hours.

Following the incident, police established checkpoints across Vlorë, Fier, Himarë, and Tepelenë. A high-speed pursuit ensued after a black Range Rover failed to stop at a checkpoint in the Alikoce region, resulting in a crash at the Peshkëpi Bridge. Occupants Luan Muça, Klaudio Lleshaj, and Mandrit Lleshaj were involved; Muça and Mandrit Lleshaj were hospitalized with injuries reported to be non-life-threatening.

Authorities also intercepted a vehicle in Fier containing Kosovar citizen Blerim Heta, who was arrested. Police seized a pistol and ammunition from the crashed vehicle and additional bullets from Heta’s vehicle. Five individuals have been arrested, while six others remain wanted. Investigations are ongoing to determine if the incident is linked to property disputes regarding investment projects in southern Albania.
