Armed group violence in Papua Pegunungan
Overview
In Jayawijaya, Papua Pegunungan, an armed group killed Aris Sanda, a civilian driver who had operated the Wamena-Mbua route for 13 years. Following the interception of his vehicle, Sanda’s body and vehicle were found burned near Lake Habema.
The TPNPB-OPM Kodap III Ndugama group claimed responsibility, alleging Sanda was a “government military intelligence agent.” However, police officials from Satgas Operasi Damai Cartenz dismissed these claims as “hoaxes,” asserting he was a civilian. Subsequent reports indicated that Sanda was detained and forced to record a statement expressing support for the group’s struggle for independence before being executed.
In response to the killing, the TPNPB issued an ultimatum to migrant workers, including taxi and motorcycle drivers, to stop operating on several transport routes, such as Wamena-Nduga and Wamena-Jayapura. Brigadier General Riyanto, Commander of Koops TNI Habema, condemned the violence and ordered an intensified search for the perpetrators, while the Indonesian military pledged to strengthen security along vital transportation routes.
