Overview

The Ars Electronica Center (AEC) marked its 30th anniversary on September 2, having opened in 1996 as a ‘museum of the future’. Under the artistic direction of Gerfried Stocker, the center has evolved from showcasing early virtual reality and internet-controlled robotics, such as Ken Goldberg’s ‘Telegarden’, to hosting contemporary innovations.

Following the center's milestone, the Ars Electronica Festival launched in Linz under the theme ‘Future Begins. Negotiating Humanity’. The event focuses on the impact of artificial intelligence on art, society, and the definition of being human, addressing themes of responsibility, democracy, and the social consequences of autonomous technology. The festival has expanded to include hundreds of exhibitions, concerts, and workshops across more than 40 locations, including the Ars Electronica Center, various universities, and the Lentos Art Museum, which hosts the Prix Ars Electronica winners.

New collaborative programming includes ‘Filmstadt’ at the Med Campus, a participatory film studio established by Canon and the Academy of Austrian Film. This installation allows visitors to use professional Cinema-EOS technology to explore roles such as directing, cinematography, sound, and post-production.
