Arsenal FC workforce reduction
Overview
Arsenal Football Club has announced plans to reduce its workforce by approximately 60 roles, representing up to seven per cent of its 871 permanent staff. The redundancies are part of a cost-cutting initiative following an operational audit and external review conducted with the assistance of the Boston Consulting Group intended to improve financial sustainability.
CEO Richard Garlick and manager Mikel Arteta confirmed that the cuts will primarily target administrative and organizational departments, specifically impacting areas such as marketing, commercial, travel, catering, and analysis. The football department, including coaching and performance staff for both the men’s and women’s teams, the Hale End academy, security, and the Arsenal Foundation will not be affected. Arteta stated the restructuring is intended to “evolve, to improve” and to “achieve the success we want” by ensuring the club can continue investment.
Despite reporting record revenues of £691m for the 2024-25 financial year and a recent Premier League title win, the club has faced seven consecutive years of financial losses. The club recorded an overall loss of £1.4m as operating costs rose to £200.8m.
Recent developments highlight that these workforce reductions coincide with the signing of a new four-year contract for Mikel Arteta, which reportedly includes a significant salary increase, with reports suggesting the deal could be worth up to £20 million per season plus bonuses. Following public criticism regarding the timing of the layoffs alongside Arteta’s new contract, the manager defended the decision, stating, “We have to make decisions to place people in the right positions and continue to invest in order to achieve our objectives and build the success we want.” The layoffs are scheduled to take effect on November 1.
