Art exhibitions in Rome

Overview

Rome is hosting major art exhibitions, including a retrospective of Robert Mapplethorpe titled ‘Le forme della bellezza’ at the Museo dell’Ara Pacis. The Mapplethorpe exhibition, which features over 200 works including portraits of Yoko Ono and Richard Gere, is scheduled to conclude its run with special evening openings in early October 2026.

Following this, the Museo di Roma – Palazzo Braschi is hosting a large-scale retrospective dedicated to Keith Haring from October 6, 2026, to April 11, 2027. Curated by Kaoru Yanase, Ilaria Miarelli Mariani, and Claudio Zambianchi, the exhibition features more than 140 works, including significant pieces from the Nakamura Keith Haring Collection, the largest of its kind in the world.

The showcase includes a diverse range of media such as prints, drawings, posters, sculptures, and paintings. It specifically highlights Haring’s ‘Subway Drawings’ alongside his political posters and large-scale paintings. The exhibition also emphasizes the artist’s historical connection to Italy, noting his 1984 visit to Rome where he painted a mural on the facade of the Palazzo delle Esposizioni. Through his use of accessible pop imagery, the collection explores themes including civil rights, sexuality, and the AIDS crisis.
