Arunachal Pradesh electoral roll revision dispute

Violence broke out in Bordumsa, Arunachal Pradesh, during a Special Intensive Revision (SIR) hearing of electoral rolls. The incident involved stone-pelting and damage to government property at the Additional Deputy Commissioner’s office, resulting in injuries and unconfirmed reports of firing. While Chakma organizations claimed they were gathering peacefully before security personnel used tear gas, the All Arunachal Pradesh Students’ Union (AAPSU) demanded the suspension of the SIR exercise in areas inhabited by Chakma and Hajong voters to protect indigenous interests.

Following the unrest, the AAPSU condemned intervention by the Manipur-based Kuki Human Rights Council (KHRC), which had communicated with the National Human Rights Commission and the United Nations regarding the situation. AAPSU President Meje Taku described these actions as “baseless, politically motivated and an unwanted interference” in state affairs. The union maintains that the electoral revision is necessary to prevent indigenous populations from becoming minorities, citing constitutional safeguards to protect local land and culture.
