Assassination of content creator in Sonora

Overview

On September 10, 2026, José Luis Esparza, a 37-year-old content creator and taquero known as ‘El Piturris’, was assassinated at the ‘Los Güichos’ taquería in the Colonia Reforma neighborhood of Ciudad Obregón, Sonora. According to the Fiscalía General de Justicia del Estado de Sonora (FGJES), an assailant, reportedly accompanied by an accomplice, entered the family-owned establishment and shot Esparza before fleeing on a motorcycle. Authorities recovered two .40 caliber shell casings at the scene, noted as being for “exclusive use of the military”.

Esparza was a prominent local figure with approximately 90,000 followers on Facebook and 40,000 on TikTok. While he died from his injuries after being transported to a hospital, his podcast producer announced that two pre-recorded episodes would be released.

On September 14, authorities reported a breakthrough in the investigation following the arrest of two men, aged 21 and 26. During these arrests, investigators seized several weapons. Ballistic testing indicated that one of the recovered pistols was used in the attack on Esparza and was also linked to another homicide occurring the previous day. The FGJES continues to investigate the murder as a potential consequence of conflicts between groups involved in local drug trafficking.
