Assassination of political leader Nadia Vehurini

Overview

Dr. Nadia Vehurini Matadama Díaz, a physician and Movimiento Ciudadano (MC) municipal leader for Tlapehuala, was assassinated at her residence in the Atlitenco de Altamira neighborhood of Chilpancingo, Guerrero. Armed individuals entered her home on the evening of August 21 or 22, 2026, and opened fire, inflicting multiple gunshot wounds to her head, neck, and chest.

Following the attack, local police, the National Guard, and the Mexican Army responded to the scene. The Guerrero State Prosecutor's Office has opened an investigation to identify the perpetrators and establish a motive, though no arrests have been made.

Political leaders, including MC national coordinator Jorge Álvarez Máynez, have condemned the killing as a “cowardly murder.” Party officials and the Network for the Political Advancement of Women in Guerrero have called for an exhaustive investigation with a gender perspective, warning that such violence against women in public life serves as a means of intimidation.
