Assault on Milan rabbi and subsequent repatriations

Overview

Following an assault on the Chief Rabbi of the Via Soderini Synagogue in Milan on September 16, Italian Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi announced the repatriation of two foreign nationals involved in the incident. The attack occurred at a bus stop in the Bande Nere area, where a group of three youths reportedly mocked and kicked the 60-year-old rabbi.

Walker Meghnagi, president of the Milan Jewish Community, called the repatriation ‘beautiful news’ and a victory for democracy.

One of the individuals repatriated to Tunisia, 21-year-old engineering student Battar Zahani, denied any hatred toward the Jewish community or Israel, characterizing the incident as a ‘joke’. Zahani, who was born in Como and raised in the Lodi region, claimed he did not personally strike the victim and was merely recording the event on his phone, while alleging his brother kicked the rabbi’s legs.

Despite his deportation, Zahani expressed a desire to return to Italy, stating, ‘My life is in Italy’ and noting that it is the country where he was born and raised. He is currently awaiting further legal clarity regarding his case.
