Assaults against Italian public transport workers
Overview
Labor unions in Italy have reported a series of violent incidents targeting public transport employees. In September, SITA workers on the Amalfi Coast were victims of physical and verbal attacks; one driver sustained facial injuries following a dispute over air conditioning, while another worker suffered a stress-induced medical emergency after being threatened during queue management.
By October, a similar incident occurred in Calabria, where an Azienda Mobilità Catanzaro (AMC) employee was physically assaulted by a passenger during a routine ticket inspection. The FILT-CGIL union characterized these events as part of a “worrying pattern of assaults and attempted assaults” against transport personnel. In response to these escalations, unions are calling on companies and local institutions to implement stronger security and preventive measures to ensure worker safety.
