Ajax defeats Atalanta 2-0 in Conference League

Overview

Ajax secured their first victory in the UEFA Conference League with a 2-0 win over Atalanta at the Johan Cruijff ArenA on October 22, 2026, during the second matchday of the league phase.

Despite Atalanta entering the match facing a significant injury crisis involving key players Sead Kolasinac, Giorgio Scalvini, Isak Hien, Franck Kessie, and Giacomo Raspadori, the game remained scoreless through the first half. Ajax saw Lucas Rosa hit the post and missed opportunities from Marcos Leonardo, while Atalanta goalkeeper Marco Carnesecchi made several saves to maintain the deadlock. Atalanta, managed by Maurizio Sarri, also struggled to convert chances created by players such as Charles De Ketelaere and Gianluca Scamacca.

The match was decided late in the second half when substitute Tolu Arokodare, who entered the match in the 66th minute, broke the tie in the 87th minute by capitalizing on a long ball from Youri Baas to beat Carnesecchi. In stoppage time, 17-year-old Abdellah Ouazane added a second goal, completing a solo run from the left to seal the victory for the Dutch side.

The result provides momentum for Ajax following a previous loss to Hajduk Split. Conversely, the defeat leaves Atalanta under increased pressure, marking their second consecutive loss in the competition. Following the match, Maurizio Sarri expressed frustration regarding officiating, specifically calling for the “abolition of VAR” after a controversial non-call on a potential penalty involving Jonathan Rowe.
