Athletic competitions and sports infrastructure in Kocaeli

Overview

Kocaeli hosted various athletic competitions in August 2026. The month began with the National Open Water Swimming Races in the İzmit Gulf, where 471 athletes participated in a 2,622-meter course between Gölcük and Derince. Kocaeli Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Tahir Büyükakın expressed intentions to elevate the swimming competition to an international level.

Later in the month, the region hosted the Büyükşehir Kocaeli Ultra Trail event at Kuzuyayla Nature Park in the Kartepe district. The competition featured two distinct routes: the 50K Sisler Dağı (Mist Mountains) stage and the 15K Geyik Patikası (Deer Path) stage. A total of 905 athletes participated, with 149 runners in the 50K race and 756 in the 15K race. To support the event, organizers provided free shuttle services from the Derbent Cable Car parking area and offered discounted cable car access. Prize money for the general classification winners ranged from 30,000 TL for third place to 41,000 TL for first place.

The event, organized through a collaboration between the Kocaeli Metropolitan Municipality, the Ministry of Youth and Sports, the Kocaeli Governor's Office, and the Turkish Athletics Federation, attracted participants from both Turkey and abroad. Athletes praised the professional organization, safety measures, and the integration of sports with the region's natural beauty. Participants noted the event drew interest from diverse age groups, including young athletes seeking inspiration.

Following these events, Kocaeli is expanding its sports infrastructure. The city is set to host the 2026 European Para Swimming Championships at the Gebze Olympic Swimming Pool from September 7–12, 2026, a milestone for athletes targeting the Los Angeles 2028 Paralympic Games. Additionally, the Kocaeli Metropolitan Municipality has commenced construction on a new 8,500-square-meter sports complex in the Fatih Sultan Mehmet neighborhood of Kartepe, which will feature various courts and fitness areas.
