Atoms funding and industrial automation expansion
Overview
Atoms, a robotics and industrial automation company co-founded by Travis Kalanick, has secured $1.7 billion in a funding round. The investment was led by Andreessen Horowitz, with additional participation from Uber, Bain Capital, and Fifth Wall. As part of the agreement, Ben Horowitz, co-founder of Andreessen Horowitz, will join the Atoms board.
The capital is designated to expand the ProKitchens network, which provides automated, ready-to-fit commercial kitchen infrastructure across several European cities, including Paris, Marseille, Lille, Lyon, Madrid, Barcelona, Milan, Lisbon, Warsaw, and Amsterdam. This initiative aims to reduce labor friction and capital burdens for food and beverage brands through flexible contracts and improved workflow management. Additionally, the company plans to expand hardware automation across KitchenBASE locations in the Asia-Pacific region, covering Hong Kong, Singapore, Taiwan, Japan, Korea, and Australia. Within the Atoms Food division, funding will support hardware projects such as automated bowl-builders and order conveyance robots.
Beyond the food sector, Atoms intends to use the funding to accelerate development in the mining and transport industries. This includes the expansion of Atoms Mining, which focuses on autonomous haulage and machine systems, as well as the development of Atoms Transport.
