Attacks on police in Guanajuato

Overview

Security forces in Guanajuato have faced multiple targeted attacks by armed groups. On August 15, state security officers from the Fuerzas de Seguridad Pública del Estado (FSPE) were ambushed while patrolling a rural road between Yuriria and Valle de Santiago. During the confrontation near San Vicente Zapote, suspects opened fire on a patrol unit and fled on foot after abandoning their vehicle. A coordinated search involving the Mexican Army and National Guard was launched, though no injuries or arrests were reported in that specific incident.

In a separate ambush on August 10 in Pénjamo, a member of the State Highway Police (PEC), Jesús Francisco, was killed on federal highway 84. During that exchange, one assailant was killed, while another officer and a civilian sustained gunshot wounds. Authorities held a memorial for Francisco, with the Secretary of Security and Peace, Juan Mauro González Martínez, vowing to continue investigations into the aggression.
