Attempted murder charge in Ocean County

Overview

Justin Martin, 36, of Saddle Brook, faces charges of attempted murder, aggravated assault, and aggravated arson following an incident in the Colliers Mills area of the Pine Barrens in Plumsted Township.

Authorities allege that during a camping trip on October 15, Martin set his girlfriend on fire and abandoned her in a wooded area. The victim, who suffered burns and smoke inhalation, was able to locate a worker in the woods to request emergency assistance. She was transported to the Temple University Burn Center in Philadelphia and reported to be in stable condition.

Investigators noted a history of alleged verbal abuse and previous incidents involving the victim. Following the attack, Martin reportedly contacted the victim’s mother to claim they had argued and that he had left the campsite before emergency services notified the family. Martin was located in Asbury Park and taken into custody.
