Auchan retail restructuring in France

The French retailer Auchan is executing a large-scale restructuring of its retail footprint through a rebranding and divestment strategy. Following a national agreement with Groupement Les Mousquetaires and validation by the French Competition Authority in July 2026, Auchan is transitioning numerous stores to the Intermarché and Hyper U banners.

The restructuring involves over 260 stores ranging from 400 to 2,500 square meters. Of these, 72 will be sold directly to Mousquetaires members, while 167 will join A+Super, an Auchan-owned entity operated as a franchise under Intermarché or Netto banners. Auchan intends to retain its 117 hypermarkets that exceed 2,500 square meters.

Regional transitions are scheduled between September 2026 and April 2027. In the Yvelines region, fourteen stores will change to Intermarché, including locations in Verneuil-sur-Seine, Conflans-Sainte-Honorine, and Sartrouville. In Avrillé, an Auchan hypermarket will transition to Hyper U, requiring a temporary closure for renovations in late September 2026. In the Nord and Pas-de-Calais regions, ten stores in areas such as Mouvaux, Lens, and Valenciennes will also transition to franchise models.
