Auchan supermarket restructuring in France
Overview
Auchan is undergoing a significant restructuring of its retail operations in France to address financial difficulties and shift its business model toward hypermarkets and drive-through services. As part of this strategy, the company is divesting nearly 300 supermarkets.
Starting in late October 2026, a wave of 39 supermarkets across various regions, including Paris, Toulouse, Strasbourg, and Hyères, will cease operating under the Auchan brand. These locations are transitioning to new signage, primarily under the Les Mousquetaires group, specifically the Intermarché and Netto brands. The French Competition Authority has granted unconditional approval for this transition.
The rebranding process involves temporary closures of approximately 15 days per location to allow for signage changes, information system updates, and new product setups. While some locations, such as those in Caluire and Massieux, have already completed the transition, the process is expected to continue progressively across the country, including specific planned changes for five stores in the Alsace region.
