Australian cattle market supply and pricing dynamics
Overview
The Australian cattle market has undergone shifts in supply and pricing driven by weather patterns and operational costs. In late September, dry conditions and low feed reserves in Queensland prompted producers to increase throughput at saleyards to preserve remaining feed. This led to increased competition from southern processors, which helped maintain firm prices despite the lack of volume from the Channel Country.
By mid-October, forecasts of significant rainfall for southeast Queensland and northern New South Wales suggested a potential tightening of supply. During this period, the price discount for northern finished cattle compared to southern cattle narrowed significantly, falling from 170¢/kg cwt to 31¢/kg. While weather shifts influenced demand, rising diesel prices began increasing freight costs, potentially impacting producer margins.
In mid-to-late October, cattle sales in Bowen and Maitland demonstrated resilience. In Bowen, strong demand for steers and females saw young steers reach $1300 per head and top heifers sell for up to $1320. In Maitland, recent rainfall bolstered buyer confidence, leading to a solid market despite a decrease in yarded cattle. Improved weather conditions have provided relief from previous drought concerns.
By late October, widespread rainfall across Queensland began creating divergent outcomes for the agricultural sector. In southwest Queensland, heavy rain has delayed the sale of the Boanbirra Aggregation, a 40,198-hectare grazing operation. Additionally, the expression of interest deadline for the estate of Sinclair Hill has been extended to November 30 to allow for inspections of the wet land. While moisture is welcomed by graziers, wheat producers in the Darling Downs report that unseasonable October rain may compromise harvest quality.
