Overview

The 2026 Austrian fire season continued into August with several large incidents driven by extreme temperatures exceeding 40 degrees Celsius. On 4 August, a blaze near Sieggraben in the Mattersburg district burned roughly 40,000 sqm, involving approximately 300 firefighters and causing a partial closure of the S31 highway. A separate fire in the Lobau area of Essling prompted the deployment of professional fire vehicles, helicopters, police, and drone units, though the nearby oil harbour was not threatened.

In the Föhrenwald near St. Egyden, a massive fire scorched more than 100 hectares. Initially, response forces swelled to over 550 firefighters aided by water-bombing aircraft and disaster-relief trains. While investigators previously indicated a high probability that the fire was caused by the spontaneous ignition of phosphorus-containing WWII ammunition, later reports noted the Lobau fire covered approximately 18 hectares and was believed to have been caused by a discarded cigarette.

By mid-August, the situation in Föhrenwald had stabilized enough to allow 250 evacuated residents to return home, though the fire was not yet fully extinguished. At the height of the incident, over 800 personnel were deployed. District Commander Mario Lukas noted that the deployment of eleven helicopters was essential to managing the crisis. As of 15 August, crews continue to manually extinguish hotspots across a 64-hectare area within the Föhrenwald.
