Autonomous vehicle industry commercial scaling

Overview

The autonomous vehicle industry is transitioning from experimental pilot phases toward commercial scaling through strategic industry partnerships. Companies are increasingly moving away from isolated fleets to integrate technology with established manufacturers to achieve economies of scale.

In Europe, Mobileye is conducting more than 60 percent of Level 4 autonomous driving tests in Germany, while Wayve has announced a partnership with Mercedes-Benz to integrate automated driving technology into a vehicle model within two years. In the United States, Kodiak AI is advancing driverless long-haul freight, targeting full autonomy on a route between Dallas and Houston by the end of 2026. Kodiak AI has already completed over 40,000 paid driverless operating hours in the Permian Basin and has begun testing with California-based agricultural logistics firm DTL.

Furthering this trend of large-scale deployment, Stellantis, Wayve, and Uber have entered a strategic partnership to accelerate the global commercialization of Level 4 autonomous vehicles. Stellantis CEO Antonio Filosa stated that the partnership with Wayve is intended to ‘reduce development costs and timelines for advanced driver-assistance systems.’ By leveraging automotive scale, the companies aim to make hands-free driving more affordable, with the first product launch targeted for North America in 2028.

Expanding this ecosystem, Stellantis, Wayve, and NVIDIA have announced a collaboration with the French government to develop Level 4 autonomous vehicles. This partnership integrates Wayve’s ‘end-to-end’ AI driver with NVIDIA’s Hyperion computing architecture and Halos OS, utilizing Stellantis’s L4-ready platforms. Additionally, the ‘Greater Paris Autonomous Driving Living Lab’—a project involving Métropole du Grand Paris, Bolt, and Stellantis—will test autonomous mobility services in dense urban environments starting in 2028, with plans to expand to 30 municipalities by 2030.
