Axel Witsel transfer to OGC Nice

Belgian midfielder Axel Witsel has reached an agreement to join the French club OGC Nice. The 37-year-old, a free agent following his time at Girona FC, was expected to sign a one-year contract with an option for an additional year, pending validation from club owner INEOS.

Following the initial reports, OGC Nice officially signed Witsel to the one-year deal. The club sought his veteran presence to reinforce the midfield due to a long-term injury to Laurent Abergel, who suffered a ruptured cruciate ligament. Sporting Director Roger Ricort and other club officials praised Witsel’s experience and leadership qualities, expecting him to serve as a key figure in the dressing room.

Upon signing, Witsel stated, “It is a pleasure to join OGC Nice. I feel good physically and still fresh mentally. I arrive with a lot of humility and the desire to help the team achieve a beautiful season.”

As a veteran with 140 caps for the Belgian national team, Witsel brings experience from top European leagues, including stints at Borussia Dortmund, Atlético Madrid, and Benfica. This move marks his first experience playing in the French league, where he is expected to integrate into the squad immediately to assist the team in its pursuit of a competitive season.
