Azerbaijan-Russia diplomatic tensions

Overview

Diplomatic tensions between Azerbaijan and Russia escalated following allegations of media-driven provocations. In mid-August, Azerbaijan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned the Russian Ambassador to protest broadcasts on platforms including Sputnik radio and Spas TV, which Baku claimed contained calls for physical violence and interference in its internal political processes. Concurrently, Azerbaijani prosecutors issued arrest warrants in absentia for three Russian citizens accused of calling for the forcible change of Azerbaijan’s constitutional order.

While the Russian Foreign Ministry stated these remarks did not reflect Moscow’s official position, tensions continued into late August. Azerbaijan condemned an incident involving unidentified individuals displaying provocative images near the guest house of its embassy in Russia. Baku requested a comprehensive investigation by Russian authorities, citing obligations under the 1961 Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations to ensure the security of diplomatic missions.
