Azione Cattolica Mediterranean Dialogue in Bari

Overview

In late July 2026, Azione Cattolica Italiana launched its ‘Orizzonti Mediterranei’ programme at a national meeting in Bari, gathering over 700 participants from across Italy. The event, themed ‘Mediterranean Horizons: Inhabiting Fraternity for a Culture of Dialogue,’ addressed migration, conflict, ecumenism, and shared citizenship, positioning Bari as a historic bridge between East and West.

The opening session featured a prayer led by Monsignor Claudio Giuliodori, who delivered a greeting from Pope Leo XIV. Transmitted via Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the Pope’s message encouraged the association to build communities capable of listening. The gathering included contributions from local leaders, such as the Mayor of Bari and the President of the Puglia Region, alongside Archbishop Giuseppe Satriano.

A few days later, on 1 August 2026, the programme’s next phase took place in Bari’s Basilica of San Nicola. Representatives of Catholic, Waldensian (Evangelical), and Orthodox churches delivered an ecumenical Pact that had been drafted after three years of inter‑church dialogue. The Pact signaled a move from discussion to concrete commitments, with Azione Cattolica urging diocesan associations to translate dialogue into action throughout Italy. National president Giuseppe Notarstefano stated, ‘We entrust our diocesan associations with a concrete commitment: to turn words into deeds, dialogue into relationships, and fraternity into shared paths in the territories.’
