Azores Rally Championship developments

Overview

Luís Miguel Rego Jr. and co-driver José Janela secured the 2026 Azores Rally Championship (CAR) title following their victory at the Volta à Ilha de São Miguel. Driving a Škoda Fabia RS Rally2, the duo dominated the gravel event, winning nine of the ten special stages.

Rego Jr. completed the rally with a total time of 1:23:07.7, finishing more than two minutes ahead of runners-up Henrique Moniz and Rodrigo Assunção, who were also piloting a Škoda Fabia Rally2 Evo. The podium was completed by Bruno Amaral and Paulo Silva, who finished 3:13.1 behind the winners. Other notable results included fourth-place finisher Carlos Martins and fifth-place finisher Pedro Câmara Jr., who won the two-wheel drive category.

This victory follows Rego and Janela’s previous success at the XLV Explore Santa Maria Rallye, where they won all nine asphalt stages to secure the championship.

Organizers continue to seek reintegration of the event into the Portuguese Rally Championship (CPR) for the 2027 season, pending evaluation by the Portuguese Automobile and Karting Federation (FPAK). While the Ponta Delgada City Council has provided “unprecedented support of 65,000 euros” for this year’s edition, organizers have previously criticized a lack of investment from the Azores Regional Government.
