Azpeitia taxi driver homicide investigation

Overview

On September 1, 2026, a 30-year-old taxi driver was shot and killed in Azpeitia, Guipúzcoa, following a deliberate vehicle collision. According to reports, a grey Volkswagen Golf rammed the victim’s Mercedes taxi on Avenida Artzubia. After both drivers exited their vehicles, the assailant fired at least five shots at the driver, including a fatal shot to the head.

The victim has been identified as Alex Aizpuru, who died at the scene. Following an intensive investigation involving searches, security camera analysis, and telephone data, a 43-year-old suspect with a criminal record for drug trafficking was arrested. The man surrendered to the Ertzaintza at a police station in Ondarroa early on Saturday, September 5, and authorities seized a short firearm from him during the surrender.

Investigators are continuing to look into whether the homicide was a “targeted settlement of accounts” to determine the exact motive and circumstances of the killing.
