Balearic Islands solar project rejections

The Government of the Balearic Islands has rejected two separate large-scale photovoltaic projects in Mallorca due to environmental and territorial concerns.

In Sencelles, the PFV Sencelles Hive project, promoted by Sun Hive SL, was halted following an unfavorable environmental impact declaration. Authorities noted that the 21-hectare installation would have required removing approximately 2,000 pine trees and impacting habitats for protected species like the Bonelli’s eagle and the tawny owl. This decision was supported by local councils and community associations.

Similarly, the Alten Mallorca IV project in Ariany was rejected after an unfavorable environmental impact statement. This 21-hectare proposal, which included a battery energy storage system, was deemed incompatible with territorial preservation. Technical analysis indicated the site consisted of high-quality agricultural land rather than marginal land, leading officials to warn that the project would cause a loss of soil productivity and increased food dependency.
