Balkan regional calls for femicide prevention

Overview

In the Balkan region, civil groups and activists are demanding urgent state intervention to combat femicide and domestic violence following several recent deaths.

In Serbia, the movement Solidarnost called for the government to define femicide as a distinct criminal offense and to provide specialized training for legal and social work professionals. The group also advocated for educational programs regarding gender equality and sustained support for NGOs providing emergency assistance and shelters.

Similarly, in Kosovo, protesters in Prishtina demonstrated following the deaths of two women, including a pregnant woman. Activists demanded that the government treat women’s safety as a “national emergency” and establish a specialized unit dedicated to preventing femicide. Additional demands included the codification of femicide as a specific crime and increased funding for social policies to address gender inequality.
